Home Remedies To Help Treat Cavities

Cavities can be uncomfortable, annoying, and downright painful. That’s why it’s important to maintain good dental hygiene. However, if you do find that you have a cavity, here are some home remedies you can try to help treat it.

What Are Cavities

A cavity is essentially a hole that develops in your tooth as a result of decay. Cavities can affect the outer and inner layer of the tooth, and can range in severity. Typically, cavities form as the tooth begins to corrode due to bacteria or poor hygiene.

A number of things can cause a cavity to develop, and the symptoms may vary from person to person. This is why it is extremely important to maintain regular check-ups and cleanings from your dentist. Patients who would like a teeth cleaning are welcome to schedule an appointment with Dr. Beaufils at his Cooper City office.

How To Recognize a Cavity

Remember, not everyone will have the same signs when it comes to a identifying a cavity. In fact, not many symptoms can be felt while the cavity is in its initial stage where it is just beginning to form. However, as your condition worsens, it is likely you will experience one or more of the following symptoms.

  • Pain while eating or drinking sweets or candy
  • Prolonged sensitivity in the teeth
  • Prominent stains on the teeth
  • Toothache
  • Discomfort while eating or biting into solid foods
  • Noticeable holes in the teeth

If you notice any of the above indications, it is likely you have or are developing a cavity in your mouth. If not properly treated, the decay could spread into other teeth and cause more serious dental health issues. If left untreated, a cavity may even require a root canal to treat.

Home Remedies For Treating Cavities

While professional help is always the best route to take when treating a cavity, it can be possible to treat or slow down the decay by using one of these home remedies.

Cloves

Due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, clove is a wonderful option to treat cavities that are forming in your teeth. Additionally, clove can help to reduce the intense pain you may feel from a toothache as well as prevent the cavity from spreading to your other teeth.

The best way to administer clove to the affected area is by applying it directly to the tooth using a cotton ball. These instructions can help you create a liquid that can be applied to the cavity.

You will need:

  • 3 drops of clove oil
  • ¼ tsp of sesame seed oil
  • A cotton ball
  • A bowl

What to do:

  • Mix the clove oil and sesame oil in the bowl.
  • Put 3 drops of the mixture on a cotton ball.
  • Apply the cotton ball directly to the tooth where the cavity is forming. Do this daily before bed (after you brush your teeth) to help heal the cavity.

Salt

Aside from seasoning, salt also carries antibacterial and antiseptic properties, which makes for an ideal home remedy ingredient. Salt can both reduce pain and inflammation that can occur when you have a cavity. Plus, it can help kill the bacteria in your mouth to keep it from spreading or progressing.

You will need:

  • 1 tsp of salt
  • 1 cup of warm water

What to do:

  • Add salt to the glass of warm water and mix thoroughly. Make sure to fully dissolve the salt in the water.
  • Take a considerable mouthful and swish it around your mouth for 60 seconds. Don’t swallow!
  • Spit the solution out and repeat until the cup is empty.
  • Repeat this process three times per day to help combat cavities.
