What You Need For A Long-Lasting Implant Placement

Millions of Americans suffer from tooth loss – mostly due to tooth decay, gingivitis, or injury. For many years, the only treatment options available for patients with missing teeth were bridges and dentures. In today’s world of dentistry, dental implants are the go-to for tooth replacement.

Getting a dental implant is more than just a routine procedure. Not everyone qualifies for dental implant surgery, so an evaluation must be done prior to surgery in order to determine:

  • if dental implant placement is possible, and
  • measurements of the mouth to ensure the implant is inserted correctly

At Beaufils Dental, our Cooper City clients are given an in-depth evaluation using modern 3D dental imaging technology which allows us to obtain the information we need prior to dental implant placement.

Important Criteria for a Dental Implant

During a patient evaluation, we focus on 4 important factors that help improve the quality of your dental implant surgery:

  1. Bone quality: Before undergoing dental implant surgery, we first have to know what we’re working with. Factors such as hard bone vs. soft bone and intermediate hardness bone vs “styrofoam” bone are important factors to consider before inserting a dental implant. Using our 3D imaging technology, we can provide information that enables us to calculate bone density. At Beaufils Dental, our team categorizes bone quality using the bone density criteria system. This system was devised by the dental industry and ranges from “hard” (D1) to “soft” (D4).

  2. Bone length and width: Obtaining exact measurements for both bone length and width is critical for the placement of your dental implant. By acquiring these measurements, we can avoid surprises mid-procedure. A surgeon can approximate this distance from a 2 dimensional (2D) x-ray; however, Dr. Beaufils can acquire these measurements with the use of a 3 dimensional (3D) CT scan.
  3. Bone angle: The anatomy of the human jaw varies. Prior to dental implant surgery, it is absolutely crucial for us to examine the angle of the bone in order to obtain proper measurements for dental implant placement.
  4. Critical anatomy location: Last but not least, we must identify the location of your nerves and sinuses. With the use of our 3D technology, we can detect their exact position and avoid touching any nerves during surgery. If a nerve is touched, you may experience temporary and, in serious cases, permanent loss of feeling in your mouth. With the proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime, providing you with significant advantages:
    • Improved appearance
    • Improved speech
    • Improved comfort
    • Easier eating
    • Improved oral health
    • Durability
