How to Pick the Right Brush for You

You’ve probably never given it much thought, but can you really be sure the toothbrush you are using is the ideal one for you? There are tons of different styles, shapes, sizes, and colors that some people feel overwhelmed and just grab the first one they see. But this isn’t always the best choice, as you may not be grabbing the right toothbrush. The size, shape, and bristle variety of the brush is the most important thing to pay attention to, as each style is recommended for certain ages, tooth strength, and oral care solutions.

Read on to learn some tips Dr. Beaufils has for patients looking to replace or upgrade their current toothbrush.

General Tips to Consider

First things first, you should familiarize yourself with the variety of toothbrushes available. As far as colors, styles, shapes, or features go, the possibilities are endless. However, when it comes to types of toothbrushes, you can narrow it down into two categories: manual and powered.

  • Manual vs. Powered

Powered toothbrushes can be either electric or battery powered and can be available in a number of colors and styles. Many even come equipped with timers and removable heads so you can share the machine with other people (remember to clean it thoroughly!).

Manual toothbrushes are the traditional, hand-powered brush that most people are familiar with. These also come in an extensive variety of colors, styles, brands, shapes, and even sizes.

Essentially, it’s up to you to decide whether you prefer a powered or manual toothbrush. Some people prefer the automatic movements of a powered brush, while others prefer the simplicity of a manual. As long as you are properly using your toothbrush at least twice a day, in addition to regular flossing and rinsing, you should achieve the same results with either one!

  • Children’s vs. Adult’s

This may seem trivial, but it is important to remember that there is a reason why children have toothbrushes specially made for them! In addition to being more fun or kid-friendly to encourage better oral hygiene habits, children’s toothbrushes are easier on their delicate mouths.

When shopping for a toothbrush for your little one, stick to high-quality brands that have been approved or endorsed by a legitimate oral health care expert! Children’s mouths are still developing and are much more sensitive than an adult’s, so they will need a soft-bristled brush that fits snugly in their hand so they can easily maneuver it.

If you find you are having trouble getting your child to follow proper oral hygiene routines, try to find them a toothbrush or toothpaste that engages them and helps them find the task more enjoyable.

  • Determining the Right Size

    • DO find a toothbrush with a handle that you can comfortably grasp and a head that fits snugly in your mouth.
    • DON’T buy a toothbrush that is too small or too large for your hand or your mouth. This can make it hard to maneuver in your mouth.

Guess what? Not all toothbrushes are created equal! Aside from kid’s sizes, there are a ton of toothbrushes that are made smaller or larger than traditional sizes to accommodate all mouth types.

  • Deciphering Bristle Variety

    • DO go with the softest, safest choice available.
    • DON’T choose hard or rough bristles because you think they will clean better.

Hard bristles are not better at removing plaque or bacteria build-up from the surface of your teeth. On the contrary, tough bristles can do more than harm than good! Brushing too abrasively can wear down the enamel on your teeth, causing them to be more sensitive and susceptible to harmful germs.

  • Listening to Expert Advice

    • DO listen to the recommendations of your dentist or similar oral care professionals.
    • DON’T ignore the suggestions of experts or purchase a toothbrush that has not undergone a legitimate quality assurance test.

This is a no-brainer – don’t ignore professionals! Ask your dentist or other dental health care experts for a recommendation or purchase a toothbrush that displays the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance.
